Free Music

5 05 2008

Yes, friends, there is more free music — and it’s from Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails again.

AN ENTIRE ALBUM of new songs (with vocals) is available for download for the large cost of your e-mail address…which just sends you a token to download the album with.

To get “The Slip,” navigate to http://theslip.nin.com/ and move through the process.

You’ll be glad you did…it’s better than Ghosts and doesn’t require floating clouds of water to enjoy….

Re-”Discovery”

9 04 2008

Kayne West brought back Daft Punk’s “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” from 2001’s “Discovery” with his hit, but there’s more to enjoy on the disc than just the sample. Read on to find why I place “Discovery” at the top of my list of best albums.

“Into The Void” or Fog is Good for Reznor

11 03 2008

Downloaded to our new iPod (yay!) is Trent Reznor’s Nine Inch Nails new four disc/album set of instrumental work. Luckily, it was perfect for the commute in this morning, which was filled with fog.

Rock and Roll Hall of Lame?

10 03 2008

We’re running an article about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony tonight on the homepage that has quite a lot of interesting perspective (read it here: http://www.nbc5i.com/dfwscene/15546719/detail.html).

Too bad I have to disagree with some of it.

SXSW Is Ready To Rock

10 03 2008

…and DFW is feeling the benefits.

We’re sending Brett Johnson (actually, he’s sending himself) plus the mighty hand of Frank Heinz to Austin’s South by Southwest music festival this upcoming weekend to cover all the nitty gritty and rocky rolly down there.

Brett’s Blog is the best source for direct info from Mr. Johnson himself, though we’ll have all his coverage, plus Mr. Heinz’s interviews up in our special SXSW Section

And, of course, it’ll all be linked to from the homepage of the DFW Scene, so why don’t you just keep on watching the wheels there?

Radio Roulette

4 03 2008

Once you’ve set your 5 or 6 radio presets in your car, it’s a hard struggle to get out of the “Radio Rut” of switching from preset to preset trying to find a station playing something you like when another is playing a commercial.

While some of you might rail on commercial radio and claim they offer nothing “new” anymore, try something new on for size…”Radio Roulette.”

Barry Overrated?

19 02 2008

You couldn’t turn on a radio this morning without hearing “Mandy” being played.

Yes, it’s true, Barry Manilow is in town, bring with him all the hundreds of fans who like his style of crooning. He even made our newly launched February Concert Calendarwhich you can find by clicking here — along with Tom Jones, who entertained the ladies last night at the Meyerson Symphony Center.

Lots of folks seem quite excited about Manilow, but, I’ll admit, I’m not one of them. I can appreciate his talent, songwriting, and voice, but I don’t really think a Barry Manilow concert is the rip-roaring good time that others might.

My question is to the faithful Scene Speak readers is: Is Barry Overrated? Hit the comments section with your opinions…

Death of a Digital Friend

11 02 2008

It’s tragic when a gadget dies.

Sometimes you just need some new batteries or a solid reboot, maybe a far as a reformat, but when you gadget really bites the big one, you can die a little inside.

I lost a friend this weekend who had recently helped me through trying times (see the last post) — my iPod finally bit the dust after 4 long years of love.

His health was deteriorating, there were signs; but like all gadget-hounds, I secretly hoped for a “death” so I could upgrade to the newest, coolest features encased in that small white Pod.

Don’t get me wrong, the hours of trying to reformat the iPod were, indeed, harrowing, and I’m not looking forward to plunking down a huge chunk of change to actually buy the video version/touch/iphone/etc. but I try to look at this with optimism….at least now I’ll be able to see video on the go.

My iSick Playlist

6 02 2008

Being sick is never a fun feeling, but trying to work even while feeling like an elephant has stepped on your head is difficult. Luckily, my years of training have lead me to some odd, but helpful solutions.

One of my favorites is based on the adage that “music soothes even the savage beast” — in this case, a sinus induced migraine headache. Therefore, I give to you, my iSick Playlist. Feel free to disagree with my choices in the comments fields.

“Shake The Disease” – Depeche Mode
“Sick Sick Sick” – Queens of the Stone Age
“Guy Who Got A Headache And Accidentally Saves The World” – The Flaming Lips
“Give Me Novocaine” – Green Day
Anything from Queen’s “Shear Heart Attack”
Anything from Beastie Boy’s “License To Ill”
“(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” – The Rolling Stones

Special Note: Already, after listening to this playlist, grabbing a soda, and taking the prescribed dosage of medication (always listen to your pharmacist, kids!) I’m feeling a little better. Maybe the bitterness is now in the blog and not in my head…

A man appals; I slap "Panama"

28 01 2008

Well, color me surprised. Every review we’ve read said Diamond Dave and the boys played a rocking show at the AAC on Saturday night, and based on the traffic around the area, it seems like they were a pretty popular bet, even with high ticket prices…

As someone pointed out over e-mail after we posted Thursday’s Flight Plan, I claimed spending the cash on tickets was a “waste.” Half of that is due to the fact that all the other sources for entertainment that weekend in the Flight Plan could be combined together and the tickets wouldn’t cost as much as a single ticket to Van Halen…and half because, in the past, there have been plenty of rip-off, one-off, last-chance reunion tours that didn’t deliver.

Am I eating crow now that they had a good show? Maybe. We’ll see if there are still good reviews when Van Halen returns to the AAC to take even more money in March.

Curious about the title? It’s a palindrome by Edward Wolpow.
