…Chain E-mails Must Go.

Years ago, before Google, e-mail was the killer app of the Internet. Even today, 91% of people say they access the Internet to send or read e-mail. I’m on e-mail all day (drop me a line!) and nearly everyday I get a chain e-mail.

They. Must. Stop.

Chain e-mails are most often wildly inaccurate, completely useless, or (worst of all) repeated ad infinitum by users that think the reply all function should be used WHENEVER POSSIBLE instead of judiciously applied.

Wildly inaccurate you say? Sure. Just check Snopes.com to see how many myths are perpertrated by chain e-mails detailing threats of viruses, inaccurate quotes, and just plain mistaken details about public figures. Plus, even the ones that have relevant information can be YEARS out of date.

As for useless? Just check your inbox for a message telling you that if you send this message on to ten friends, your crush will kiss you. (Personal note: Natalie Portman did not kiss me after sending on the so -noted message)

Worst is when you see a chain e-mail multiple times in your box — warning you about the dangers of aspartame, claiming you’ll get money for sending on this e-mail, or telling you a certain President candidate is a Muslim — all of which are bogus, bogus, stories.

So how do we combat this? Don’t send chain e-mail. Period.
