$300 million dollars in 10 days. Another record smashed by The Dark Knight!

That puts it at the 23rd highest grossing film of all time — in just 10 days. Iron Man, the current topper of the year, is only $700,000 away from TDK’s reach — and Iron Man’s been out since May. It’s no question TDK will beat Iron Man (and confirm the thinking that really good superhero movies make money) but can it sink “Titanic?”
My thought? Yes, but it’ll be close.
TDK has some benefits Titanic never had – it’s a sequel, it’s a franchise, and it’s got publicity out the wazoo from Heath Ledger’s death (plus the Oscar buzz), Bale’s recent arrest, and the massive box office totals currently smashing records.
But we’ll have to wait to see what kind of legs its got. Titanic was unstoppable, bringing in money from repeat viewings, and big draws from it’s non-premiere weekend. According to Box Office Mojo, Titantic still made $28 Million on it’s fourth weekend.
TDK won this weekend again with an estimated $75 million, which, if accurate, would break Shrek 2’s second weekend opening record, further propelling it toward the top. Only $75 million more dollars seperate TDK from the number 9 all-time slot, which would knock Star Wars: Episode III down to number ten. But to get to Shrek 2’s second place? That’ll take $130 million more than TDK’s current gross.
And Titanic? That’s still $290 million away…
So why do I still think they’ll make it? We’re only on week two of release, during a summer that Americans are spending more at the movies. We’ll see how long the Bat-Boat can stay afloat, but if it pulls in more than $45 million next weekend, the records will continue to be broken…
