It’s a line from Watchmen, one of the best graphic novels of all time.
It’s also being made into a movie, which I’m sure you saw the trailer for in front of The Dark Knight (no? so you’re the ones that is keeping it from beating Titanic, huh?).
But what is Watchmen? Wiki here, and come back!
Back? Great. Watchmen was a big change in the comics world, bringing a serious noir feel to back many books, including Batman. In fact, much of the inspiration for the Joker in The Dark Knight was based on Alan Moore’s other work(published after Watchmen) The Killing Joke.
Now’s the time where you say, nerd, go back to your nerd hole in comic land. But, wait! It’s going to get juicier!
Watchman has been on the film development table before Hancock tried to clumsily deal with “superheroes with flaws” and before The Dark Knight finally say the light of day as the dark epic “realistic” superhero story that is currently bringing in the bucks. Now, finally, we’ll see a faithful interpretation of this challenging and classic story — and it’s going to up the ante for future comic book movies.
Zack Snyder — the director who successfully adapted 300, another graphic novel — is directing Watchman, so that’s a serious plus. And, so far, he’s faithfully recreating the mood, styles, and characters in full motion live action that should do justice to the original text.
But better than that, he’s going to beat his own record for 300 by opening it in March, with a story that is now palatable by movie execs and bolstered by the “Dark” tone of the latest Batman. It’s going to continue the point that “serious” comic book movies can continue to be made, and not neutered to fit inside the “dumb audience” box that Hollywood often puts moviegoers in.
Now we can certainly say, the image below will never happen again:
