All of America is, it seems.
Sure, Friday night may have sold out shows for “Sex and the City: The Movie That’s Too Long With Characters Too Old To Connect With Anyone But Housewives Who Aren’t Nearly As Desperate As Hollywood Thinks.” but the rest of the weekend didn’t fare so well, according to this article (click here) from The-Numbers.com.
The gist of the article is; after a huge $26.93 million Friday night, SATC should have made nearly $70 million for the weekend instead of the $55 that is being estimated by the studio. With that estimate, and a budget of $57 (according to the-numbers.com again), that means that SATC hasn’t broken even on their first weekend…and with the decline from Friday’s huge opening to $17million on Sat, and $11million on Sun, (around -30% each day) it’s possible that SATC won’t be the blockbuster the executives wanted it to be.
The fact is, I know women who went to the film opening night with their girlfriends, but I don’t really know anyone that wants to go (but didn’t) on this first go-round. “Event” films are notorious for the “watch on first weekend” mentality, and SATC may be the “event” film of the year…if only for ladies.
While it was a “much-ado” film for the ladies, it’s a rated “R” film (which lowers box office intake) that requires at least some (if not A LOT) of knowledge of the series beforehand (which lowers the audience numbers). The final effect? Lower amounts of people going leads to lower ticket sales and lower profit.
So, at least at the box office, I think America is over “Sex.”
