“Into The Void” or Fog is Good for Reznor

11 03 2008

Downloaded to our new iPod (yay!) is Trent Reznor’s Nine Inch Nails new four disc/album set of instrumental work. Luckily, it was perfect for the commute in this morning, which was filled with fog.

Seems like there’s something about fog that goes great with Nine Inch Nails’ industrial sounds, even though “Ghosts,” the latest pieces, don’t exactly like previous albums in the NIN catalog. In fact, they’re closer to Reznor’s instrumental work for movie and game scores (Doom 3 actually comes to mind) combined with a high degree of freedom and experimentation.

There aren’t any singles, no vocals, and nothing truly “thematic” about the tracks, just hammering pianos and chortling beeps of electronic instruments normally used by Reznor in his NIN and other scoring work. It’s familiar and just not jaw-dropping until Ghosts III-IV, where the tempo picks up, but it sure does sound better in fog or in the dark.

The biggest news about the album is that it’s cheap (or free!) depending on what version you want. We opted for a $10 purchase of all of the Ghosts in a digital download format plus a two disc set that should be shipped to the home office by April 8th.

But that’s not the only option:

  • The FREE option gives you the first 9 tracks of Ghosts I with NO DRM and a full PDF with album art.
  • $5 gets you all 4 Ghosts albums (36 tracks) as a digital download with all the accompanying art.
  • $10 gets the digital download of 36 tracks immediately, plus a 2 disc set shipped to your door
  • $75 gets a Deluxe Edition with all of the above, plus a data DVD of multi-track format songs, Blu-Ray disc of super-high quality sound with accompanying slideshow.

Head to NIN.com to order, or listen to the album.
